GR20 in Corsica: The Complete Guide to Prepare Your Crossing

Everything you need to know about the GR20 in Corsica: stages, difficulty, gear, budget and tips. The complete guide to prepare Europe's most beautiful hike.

The GR20 is considered the most difficult and beautiful long-distance trail in Europe. Crossing Corsica from north to south over 180 km, it offers breathtaking landscapes of mountains, forests and high-altitude lakes. Here's everything you need to know to prepare.

The GR20 in numbers

  • Distance: 180 km
  • Total elevation gain: ~13,000 m
  • Number of stages: 16 official stages
  • Average duration: 12 to 16 days
  • Highest point: Monte Cinto (2,706 m)
  • North start: Calenzana
  • South finish: Conca

GR20 stages

Northern section (Calenzana → Vizzavona) — Most technical

The first 8 stages are the most physically demanding. Rocks, scrambling sections, snow patches early in the season. This is also where the most spectacular scenery is found.

Southern section (Vizzavona → Conca) — More accessible

The last 8 stages are less technical but still demanding. Landscapes shift to pine forests, plateaus and natural pools.

When to go?

The GR20 season runs from mid-June to mid-October:

  • June: Fewer people but possible snow patches at altitude
  • July-August: Optimal conditions but heavy crowds
  • September: Ideal — fewer people, still good weather

Essential gear

  • Hiking boots — high-cut and rigid (mandatory)
  • Backpack — 40-50L maximum
  • Sleeping bag — comfort 5°C
  • Trekking poles (strongly recommended)
  • Technical clothing — layers + waterproof shell
  • Filtering bottle or purification tablets
  • GPS watch to record your trace

Budget

  • Refuge: €14-16/night (dormitory)
  • Bivouac: €7/night (next to a refuge)
  • Refuge meals: €15-25 per meal
  • Total budget: €500-800 for 16 days (excluding transport)

Our tips for a successful GR20

  1. Train at least 3 months before with mountain hikes
  2. Book refuges in advance (mandatory in high season)
  3. Start early (6-7am) to avoid heat and storms
  4. Lighten your pack — every gram counts over 16 days
  5. Record your GPS trace to create your Paperoad poster afterwards
