In 1878, Robert Louis Stevenson crossed the Cévennes with Modestine, his donkey, and wrote Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes. The GR70 follows his route: the Velay, the Gévaudan, the abbey of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, Mont Lozère, Le Pont-de-Montvert, Florac, then Saint-Jean-du-Gard and Alès.
